Interplay® Therapy
Interplay® is a non-directive approach that combines attachment theory and interpersonal neurobiology (how the mind is shaped by relationship) to offer Play Therapy with the caregiver and child together. This relationship-based approach offers caregivers insight into their child’s behaviours and emotional responses and helps children understand their caregiver’s perspectives and experience. This form of therapy facilitates growth and supports the relationship between the child and their parent/caregiver as they go through vital phases of healing together.
Interplay® is a modality of therapy where a primary caregiver, such as a mother, father, or carer, joins a child in sessions. There are no instructions around play and you are very much encouraged to play with your child in the play room as you would play together at home. Interplay therapists enter the child and parents/carers world through play and note the interactions/reactions and responses, validating and responding to the observed experience and offering therapeutic insight and support.
The approach recognises the critical role that parents play in their child's emotional development and strengthens the attachment bond through play. Interplay has been shown to be particularly effective in helping children with emotional issues, as it provides a safe, supportive space for them to connect with their caregivers and express their emotions. Additionally, involving parents in the therapy process helps them develop new parenting skills and strategies that can benefit their child long after the therapy has ended.
